My Doomsday Review

March 31, 2008

The early trailers for this movie looked promising to me. I like a movie with a chick who kicks ass, and Rhona Mitra as the lead looked pretty hott with that sword. Then the plot comes out: a virus, called the Reaper Virus, starts spreading and eventually leads to a quarantine of Scotland. Then survivors are seen and a team is sent in to find the cure. Sound familiar? My speculations going into the movie was that the story, dialogue, and anything relating would be recycled garbage, and that the action would be the only entertaining parts of the movie. I was pretty much right. Anytime they were explaining what happened or people were talking it was just boring. There was also this terrible music, I think it was partly the theater’s fault, but the music was louder than the talking and it got really annoying quickly.

When the action finally started it got entertaining. Not the best action I’ve seen, but it was still fun for what it was. The main female character, Sinclair, was pretty awesome the whole time. The crazy bad guy with the Mohawk was another entertaining factor.

The people that were infected were really nothing new either, all bubbly face and bloody and crazy. JUST SHOOT EM IN THE HEAD!

Another thing that I didn’t like was Sinclair had this stupid little eyeball thing. She lost her eyeball as a kid in the beginning of the movie, and now it’s some weird camera that retains its eyeball form. She can take it out of her eye socket as she wishes. It just annoyed the fuck out of me that someone thought that was a cool idea:

“She loses her eyeball right? Follow me guys, follow me here…so in the FUTURE, she can just pull it out of her head and place it on the floor FOLLOW ME GUYS! She has a screen on her watch to see what’s going on right? When she’s done using it, she just POPS THAT FUCKER BACK IN THERE!”

This movie accomplished what it needed to MOSTLY, which was entertain us with a chick kicking ass. I suggest only go see it if you have nothing else to do. I give this a 2 out of 5.

Stuff That Matters

March 31, 2008

Right now I should be writing a first draft of my paper for school, but the the wonders of the interweb have taken over. I’ve been reading a LOT of interesting things on other blogs and websites. I suppose I could share some of these awesome things.

From The Movie Blog:

Will Smith Secret Scientologist? Should It Matter?
It was a couple of days ago that a story broke about Will Smith actually being a Scientologist and Sony Studios trying to kill the story.
(read the rest here)

I left a comment on that story, and I just went back to it real quick, and i found a response to my comment from the Founder of the Website. He slightly tore me a new asshole. Here’s how the comments went:

He left two questions at the end:

1) If it came out that Will Smith was a Scientologist, WOULD it effect (not SHOULD it effect) your interest or desire in anyway to see his projects?

2) Now, do you think Smith coming out as a Scientologist would effect the desire of OTHER PEOPLE to see his projects?

My comment:

Why do people feel the need to make so much fun about a group of religious fanatics called Scientologists who believe that we came from aliens(besides the easy target of the science fiction ties), when more than half of the USA is made up of a group of religious fanatics who believe we came from a big man in the sky?We aren’t so different, we all believe what we believe. Let’s just try to accept that while we watch Cruise and Smith in their movies.1) No, it will definitely not affect my interest in his movies.2) Yes, because there are rude and arrogant people out there who think they are better than everyone else.John(founder of Movie Blog)’s response:

Hey Ryanmag,You said:Yes, because there are rude and arrogant people out there who think they are better than everyone else.Do you see the irony in your comment? Basically you just said that anyone who has a different opinion than you on this issue is “arrogant and rude”… thus you’re essentially saying you’re better than they are. You then go on to accuse those who have a different opinion than you of “thinking they are better than everyone else”.Personally, I agree with you in principle. As I said in my post, what a person believes doesn’t bother nor concern me. But I can totally understand, with all the Cruise whackiness, why some people would be put off by an entertainer who decides to associate himself with that whackiness.Personally, I still like Cruise as an actor very much and like watching his work… but I wouldn’t let him babysit my kids (if I had any that is)

(ouch)

My second Comment:

Hey John, I suppose I jumped the gun on that answer to the question and made MYSELF look rude and arrogant, and i can see where I came off as contradicting myself. I guess what I basically want to say was simply: Yes, I think there are other people out there who won’t see it because of this reason. And thinking about it more, people have the right to do so no matter how sad of a fact it is. If anyone just read your response, John, I probably just disappointed their hopes in a FIERCE COMMENT BATTLE. But what can I say, you called me out and all I could think was “shit, I DID do that.”Thanks for the response.

That was fun. Check out their website, it’s the only site I go to for movie news simply because I don’t have time to check everyone’s movie news websites.

From The Pirate’s Dilemma:

The Trouble With Music
The future of digital media is not one large revenue stream. Lawsuits cannot control the flow of digital information. People are going to use your stuff anyway. The only thing you can do is give them the option to pay for it.

That paragraph above is just one of countless incredible points about music today that this guy makes. His name is Matt Mason and he has an awesome book also called The Pirate’s Dilemma. If you are interested in having a career in music or the industry I highly recommend you read his book. It’s also just incredibly interesting even if you don’t plan on a music career.

From Lefsetz Letter:

Everybody Knows
What does everybody know?

Everybody knows radio sucks. Everybody knows MTV plays no videos. Everybody knows mainstream hip-hop is about money. Everybody knows Mariah Carey is a twit. Everybody knows Gene Simmons is a breadhead. Everybody knows “American Idol” is about the drama, not the music.

But the mainstream media never admits the above. It keeps slinging the shit the big entertainment companies create. They’re in cahoots. It’s a closed system. And it can’t be changed, because there’s too much money involved, and longstanding relationships.

This guy has a lot of great things to say; mostly about the music industry and the future of it all. His sometimes goes on what seems a rampage of ideas, such as this entry I’m sharing. He’s really interesting, informative, and fun to read. Again, if you are interested in a career in music then read this guy.

I think I have given you just about enough reading to do for now. I didn’t start this entry with the intention of promoting people but that’s where it took me.

I’ll be back later today.

It’s So Easy, but…

March 26, 2008

The Law of Attraction. I heard this described once in a theory: that if one thinks of all the positive things they want to do, then those positive things are bound to come true. Same goes if someone is always thinking of all the bad things that could happen, those bad things will come true. Even if the theory is bull shit, it couldn’t hurt. Thinking positively about anything is always good. The theory doesn’t seem so outrageous when the fact that positive thoughts make people feel better, and the opposite.

There are some negative things going on. But there always are and always will be. Fuck them, we’ve got it.

I see the strangers staring
I’m staring back at them

When two people meet, they just know. There isn’t any questioning when they meet, they just know. They know that something is going to happen between them and that it’s going to be great. What they don’t know is how it will end, but at the time it doesn’t matter. Nothing is forced, and nothing is lost.

True love is something that comes easy
Just one kiss god I swear I want to…

Secret Crowds

March 10, 2008

“Attitude is everything”

That is a phrase we might hear in gym class at school, or from ANY older person giving us advice. We hear it so much it becomes a cliche phrase and it tends to lose any meaning.

I discovered that this phrase, and many others like it that we always are told, are cliche and overused for a reason. That reason is because they are dead-on accurate phrases. I put this one to the test. I wanted to practice some songs that I had written but hadn’t actually every played. I know from too much past experience that having a shitty attitude and feeling churns out shitty sounding songs. I took a drive and blasted some feel good music. The plan was to over do it, WAY over do it, and I blasted the most over the top ridiculous energetic songs I could think of: Angels & Airwaves.

Songs like “Secret Crowds” talking about creating your own world for all the people with no place in this one:

If I had my own world
I’d build you an empire
From here to the far lands
To spread love like violence

Calling on all the crowds hiding in secret places to come out:

Let me feel you, carry you higher
Watch our words spread hope like fire
Secret crowds rise up and gather
Hear your voices sing back louder

It’s a strangely simple song yet so full of power that the hopeless and hopeful can’t help but believe in it:

Let’s make this a new world
I swear you can go if you want to
I know that you have it within you
Inventing the first clean and usable,
God’s greatest miracle

All coming from the mind of former Blink-182 singer/guitarist Tom DeLonge responsible for lyrics such as:

She smokes a dozen and he doesn’t seem to notice the smell
He took the seat off his own bike, because the way that it felt
He wants to bone this, I know she is ready to blow
They go out every night, his pants are super tight, oh yeah
They don’t even care at all

But is it really so hard to believe he would become such an inspirational lyricist, when even in Blink he wrote things like:

Everything has fallen to pieces
Earth is dying help me Jesus
We need guidance, we’ve been misled
Young and hostile, but not stupid

It’s been in him all along, but pressures of remaining the bad ass, punk rocker, dirty mouth kept it inside for the most part. I think anybody can relate to that. I see people saying things like “why did he change and stop telling jokes”. He didn’t change and neither did we. He brought out the other side thats in most of us Blink-182 fans and beyond people who listen to Blink.

Tom DeLonge had a bigger impact on me than I initially thought. I never thought about anything important about the future or my future ever. But in the past 6 months or so I’ve been doing intense thinking and evaluation of the world around me and what I am going to do in it. I’ve actually got plans. I have things either written in my head or in my computer. I’ve got ideas. I’ve got dreams. I fully intend to act on them.

I am not saying that everyone needs to go out and listen to Tom DeLonge and Angels & Airwaves (however if it interests you i recommend you go to their website and check out the music video for Secret Crowds on the front page). I think everyone can find someone in their own interest that can bring out the same feelings and ideas that DeLonge has brought out of me. Whether it be a famous person or your mother or your neighbor. There’s someone who can do it.

Or maybe it’s an event that will get you thinking. Some big event. For a lot of people it was 9/11. For others it could be something on a smaller scale such as a death of a friend or family member under bad circumstances.

The Future is ours, don’t let anyone take it from us.

I am you, you are me.

March 10, 2008

You have a choice. You can do anything you want. Nobody can tell you what to do or how to live your life.

You have all the possibilities to create a vision of your future, and then make it happen. You can find the path and take it.

You can look however you want to look. Nobody’s opinion matters except for the people who like you the way you are.

You are allowed to fuck up. Everyone fucks up and if they try to make you feel inferior to them because of it, they are clearly shitty, inferior liars and you should consider never associating with them.

You will get hurt, but that’s not what matters. What matters is how you deal with the hurt and how quickly you can recover.

You are who you are. There is no “one day I’ll be”, you are who you are now.

All you need is love. It’ll save the world.

Make Sexy Time, Not War

March 7, 2008

I watched a movie yesterday called Day Zero.

It was a smaller film and could be an independent. It centered on these three friends living in New York City who have 30 days to report for a modern day military draft played by Chris Klein(American Pie), Elijah Wood(Lord of the Rings DUH) and John Bernthal(who the hell knows). Klein’s character is a rich lawyer who just made partner, and who is living the rich life. Bernthal’s character is a taxi driver and not living in the best conditions. Wood’s character is a writer who is not so self-confident and has seen a psychiatrist regularly for many years.

All three of them take the situation differently which keeps the story interesting by going in all different ways. Elijah Wood’s character clearly takes it the worst hence is tiny build and lack of confidence in himself, and is probably the most easily related to by any young skinny guys(girls can’t get drafted).

Watching this movie just BEGS the question: What would you do if you got drafted?

First, I’d say “FUCK!”.

The first person I would talk to is my older brother, he served a total of about two years in Iraq and that is more than enough experience to talk to him about. I would also start eating way healthier and exercising constantly to be as prepared as possible for the imminent physical activity. I’d get into a habit of waking up at hideous hours of the morning just to get the tiniest taste of the rude awakenings to come.

In the movie, they had 30 days to report. That would give me about 4 full weeks including weekends. My training would consist mostly during the week. Weekends would be dedicated to getting in touch with people and informing them. In the film it was really hard for these guys to talk to people and say bye, because they couldn’t help but make it seem like they had 30 days before their death. They weren’t definitely headed for a death but they couldn’t help but think otherwise. I imagine I would take it the same way.

This all seems too simple. How could I just get my draft papers and so easily start a training routine and a goodbye ceremony every weekend until the report date? I honestly think I would keep telling myself that it’s what I have to do, until the day I have to report. I don’t know if I’d be so willing when the day came. I know it will take a fucking truck to pull me to wherever I would have to report. In fact I don’t see it highly unlikely that I’d pack my shit and run, along with many others.

If I ran away I would assume police officers would get a list of people who didn’t report and would be looking for these runaway draftees. In which case I might try to grow a beard and ditch all documentation of my name, leave it home. With the days of the internet I find it likely that you could may be able to contact places where draftees are hiding out, not so sure how fail-safe that would be if it was that easily found.

Do I think the draft will actually happen? I can’t be sure but I know that the longer this war goes on, the more possibility it will happen.

This would be the part where I ask the readers to tell ME what they would do, but I do not run a website here with a loyal community to give good response…yet. If I do happen to have someone that visits me here everyday then I encourage YOU, my ONE loyal reader, to give me a nice response on what YOU would do.

Love,

Scotty Rocks(that’s my alias if I ever get drafted and run away).

Sleep? No. Energy? Yes.

March 5, 2008

It is currently 2:20 AM, I haven’t been up this late in a long time. But there’s this energy I’ve got going that I don’t want to put to sleep. This positive awesome crazy feeling that I can’t just let go. So I’m keeping it up until my responsible side kicks in and tells me to quit.

Music has been the main force behind the arousal of this feeling. Specifically Jimmy Eat World’s songs Big Casino and The Middle. I got a live concert that they had professionally recorded a month ago and it is awesome. Big Casino is off of their newest album and it is one of my favorite songs of all time (for the time being).

I’m the one who gets away
I’m a New Jersey success story
And they’ll say “Lord give me the chance to shake that hand”

I have one last wish
And it’s from the heart
Just let me down
Just let me down easy

I thought for years and years that the song The Middle said:

It just takes some time
Little brother in the middle

Me being a middle child and being the odd one out of my brothers, I loved this song and it totally connected with me(and no doubt every other teenager). Only to find out that the lyrics REALLY said:

It just takes some time
Little girl you’re in the middle

I still pretend it’s what I want to hear, and that’s all that counts really.

What else is keeping me up with this energy…I think I’m gonna keep it to myself until further developments. If all goes well then you, my one and only reader, will know immediately. I also decided that, since music gives me this fucking crazy energy every once in a while. It’s time to blow that savings money I had set aside for…saving…on this great guitar I’ve got my eyes set on. Along with a little credit card debt on the side I should be good and ready to get me going.

What I think YOU can take out of this is, find that thing that just makes you wish the feeling never ends and blow your life savings on it because you only live once. Okay, okay be a LITTLE responsible about it but don’t let it go. Do what you want to do and fuck everybody else who tells you otherwise. I love music, I’ll make it my whole life. Join me?

Guitar much?

So I make love to my guitar, don’t judge.
